The Comma Sense Story

I've always loved words. At primary school I wrote a children’s book ‘The Cutlery Family’ with my best friend (I still have it). As a teenager I won a bike for penning a witty poem about school shoes. I studied four languages to varying degrees through school, college and university.

French is my favourite language, which I took to degree level. Working and studying in France was a real eye-opener. There's a fine line between telling someone you're full at dinner and revealing you're pregnant! Choosing the right words to get your message across is pretty important.

Storytelling is my bag. After spending five minutes with someone, my brain starts to develop ideas for their blog posts. I'm the girl who carries a notebook and a Sharpie at all times - to collect inspiration and correct spelling, punctuation and grammar. Temporary road signs are a particular favourite of mine! My childhood nickname, Shirley Sharp Eyes, has never left me.

When I left my role as a Communications Manager for a retail bank in late 2015, I decided a new challenge was in order. It was time to make my mark on the world.

After toying with a few career changing ideas, including retraining as an interior designer and becoming a property developer, I settled on starting Comma Sense. I still harbour a desire to create stylish homes, but for now I’m happy creating pages of beautiful, readable words that connect businesses with customers.

Web developers and designers like working with me because I get what they need. I’ve worked on both sides - commissioning and project managing website development, creating, managing and training others to write online content.

I am…

Curious

‘How do I write in the voice of another person or business?’ I do my research and ask loads of questions. I’m a good listener who’s curious to learn.

Before I start writing, I get under the skin of your business and walk in your customers’ shoes. I like to have ALL the information to hand so I can sift out what’s relevant and valuable to your customers.

Trusted

It’s hard to hand over something as personal as your website or blog to a stranger. I get it. I like to be in control too.

Sometimes you have to take a leap of faith and hand the job to a someone who knows what they’re doing. I promise I will do it in half the time and deliver the results you want to achieve. Integrity is my middle name.

Accurate

To me, a misplaced apostrophe is like a flashing siren. I take pride in correct spellings, punctuation and grammar. I choose the right words to connect you with your audience.

I check, check and check again before I supply content for approval. My writing represents both my own and my clients’ businesses. It’s both our reputations that are at stake - and reputations are valuable.

Discreet

I’m proud of every piece of content I produce, without feeling the need to share every client project with an ‘I did this’ sticker slapped on it.

I’m happy working behind the scenes and take satisfaction from seeing the copy I create achieve results for you. If you don’t want your clients to know you didn’t write it, your secret is safe with me.

What my clients say…
